Internal medicine treats diseases of internal organs (heart, lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract, spleen, blood, kidneys, metabolism, joints, backbones), looks at the body as a whole and deals with the diagnosis and treatment of most adult diseases.

The vast majority of patients suffer from multiple diseases and require multiple treatments. If the patient chooses to go to the internist, he or she avoids the excess of medical checkups which may not be required. The internist is the one who analyzes these situations and decides which condition also requires a more specialized consultation or treatment, that will be treated directly. Also the internist coordinates the treatment regimens such as medication overlays or side effects due to contradictory actions of drugs.

There are diseases of the entire body, affecting many vital organs, the so-called system diseases (collagenosis, vasculitis, etc.), diseases also treated by internal medicine. A patient who addressed several physicians with various specialties without a diagnosis is likely to suffer from such a system disease and should report to an internist.
This specialty addresses patients with concomitant diseases or with many unclear, vague, hard to put symptoms.

Common diseases diagnosed and treated by the internist:

Heart: hypertension, ischemic heart disease, heart failure.
Lungs: chronic bronchitis, asthma, COPD, pneumonia, acute tracheobronchitis, cancer screening.
Stomach: gastritis, ulcer, reflux disease, cancer screening.
Liver: chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, steatosis (fatty liver), dyskinesia and gallstones (stones), cancer screening.
    Colon: irritable bowel, cancer screening.
Kidney: kidney stones (sand and stones), urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis, chronic renal failure
Blood: anemia, other serious diseases screening (lymphoma, leukemia).
Skeleton and joints: degenerative and inflammatory rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis.
Metabolism: dyslipidemia (high cholesterol), gout, diabetes and thyroid disease.
    System diseases: lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis.
